Educational Thought of Swami Vivekanand

Swamiji's Educational Thought-"All knowledge that the world has ever received comes from the mind; the infinite library of the universe is in your mind. The external world is only the suggestion, the occasion, which sets you to study your mind.
The falling of apple gave suggestion to Newton, and he studied his own mind.He rearranged all the precious links of thought in his mind and discovered a new link among them, which we call the law of Gravitation.
Swamiji presented a philosophy of education for man making. He condemned contemporary education system, the chief objection raised by him was that it turned men into slaves, capable of slavery and nothing else.
According to Vivekanand the Aims of Education is:-
1.Self Development- In contrast to the contemporary system of education,he advocated education for self - development. He said,"By education I do not mean the present system, but something in the line of positive teaching.Mere book learning won't do.We want the education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expended and by which one can stand on one's own feet. The function of education is the uncovering of knowledge hidden in our mind,Education is the process of self development.A person's education is not judged by the number of books he has read, but the thickness of the cover of ignorance on his mind.
2.Fulfilment of Swadharma-He supported the idea of Swadharma in education. He said, getting by heart the thoughts of other in a foreign language and stuffing your brain with them and taking some university degree, you can pride yourself as educated. Is this education? In his opinion in an atmosphere of freedom, with love and sympathy of love, the child will develop courage and Self -reliance.He stated,"If you do not allow one to become a lion,he will become a fox."
3.Character Formation- For character formation the education should present high ideals before the educated.Teacher should show high standard of his/ her personal life.
4.Hard Work-Hard work is required for character formation.
5.Moral and Spiritual Values-Students should have faith, humility, submission and veneration towards the teachers. The true teacher is he,who can immediately come down to the level of the student's soul and see through and understand through his mind.
6.Gurukul System- Vivekanand favoured the ancient Gurukul System of education. In this System the students served the teacher, who in his turn, helped the pupil everywhere to achieve knowledge.
7.Formation of good habits-Good habits make for good character,Bad habits make bad character.Man is caught in the net of his own karmas from which he alone can get out,no one can directly help him.
8.Learning through mistakes-The child should be allowed to commit mistakes in the process of character formation. He will learn much by his mistakes.Errors are stepping stones to our progress.
9.Freedom of Growth-In his opinion the teacher should not exert any pressure on the child. The teacher should help the child in growing.
In this way Vivekanand's Educational thoughts are meaningful for us.
